Hillside village
The entire landscape of this section of northern Italy is covered with these picturesque small villages. They seem so quaint and charming for the first couple days you're there, but then they become a common sight every where you turn.
A small hillside farm village.
Must be a wealthy family arrangement here, a couple multi-floor dwellings, a large barn, and their own church.
St Johann church
A small church in an amazingly beautiful setting. And true to form, some local cows hanging out.
The lonely larch
These larch trees look like pines, but change colors and lose the leaves/needles during the fall.
Lago di Braies
Lago di Braies, canoes and larches
Still reflection in the lake, convenient red canoes all lined up for the photo.
Lago di Braies chapel
A small chapel, built in 1904.
Passo di Giau
A high pass, near Cortina d'Ampezzo, has tremendous views, especially to the east. This rocky promontory oversees the pass. The top of a ski lift is visible on the left.
A view into the rocky ridges looking eastward from the pass. The plain blue sky necessitated close-up shots of the dramatic mountain ridges.
Passo Rolle
A small mountain lake near this pass. While the lack of dramatic weather in the sky was disappointing, the quiet air allowed for crystal clear reflections of the distant peaks.
A lone larch, Val Venegia
A quiet valley park near Trentino, larch/pine forest surrounded by dramatic rocky spires.
Quiet stream, near sunset.
Alpe di Suisi
A large plateau, filled with small ski resorts, some farms, and surrounded by rocky faces and peaks. This view is looking westward, just after sunrise.
A sunset shot, looking to the east.
Sunrise view, looking south.
Tres Cime di Lavaredo
Dramatic peaks, with mountain ranges on all sides.
Tres Cime at night
We hung around waiting to take some star shots. The wives were hiking back down to the road, their headlights seen on the lower left. The orange glow is not sunset, but rather city glow from some distant towns.
The Last Church
Our last evening in the Dolomites, a short hike up to St Jakob church. The beautiful model in the red coat is Gloria enjoying the view.
